Any project is complex, but this project presented significant challenges. The site had very poor soil structure of Clay and Green Sand and everyday new springs would emerge. This project required 2,500 cubic meters or 4000 tonnes of sub soil to be excavated and fortunately our clients were happy for this to be shipped across their land and deposited in an adjacent field. This was a space that the clients rarely set foot on as it was a boggy field, which then it became something akin to The Somme, but is now a lush wildflower meadow that even local gardening clubs visit to admire. This field is now 6 feet higher than when we started.
We referred to this project as ‘The Innovation Project’ as we explored new systems and practices to increase efficiency, use less material and to hopefully have less impact on the landscape, our clients and their neighbours in the community around them. We worked with a very dynamic Structural Engineer who took a pragmatic and lightweight approach and specified a proprietary walling system. This allowed us to build fast, as we had in excess of 280 linear meters of walling to construct, some of it 3m above finished floor level on 4 different levels and all to be completed with an existing swimming pool standing in the middle of the site.
Complex setting out was required to achieve the many radii involved, but the walling system allowed us to realise the design in a simple and cost-effective way.
After 50 weeks this project was finally completed, and the clients are now enjoying their new garden spaces.
Unique Projects certainly enjoy a challenge! They have built us a stunning terrace surrounding our existing pool and despite springs welling up and difficult terrain, we now have the perfect patio and landscaping with lighting. A marvellous, beautiful space for us to share with family and friends.
